Things I Love {Birds}

This post is for the birds!
Hee hee hee!  Get it????  I crack myself up sometimes. Truly.

I saw the first hummingbird yesterday- it buzzed by my windows that usually have hummingbird feeders on them.  Time to make and keep a stock of sugar water!  Their return always brings me such joy! (so hence this post!)

While some hobbies have come and gone over the years- I have two hobbies (or interests) that have remained with me all these years: watching/observing birds (okay...wildlife in general) and gardening.  While I love observing birds I'm by no means a professional bird watcher.  I end up running and getting my bird guide book when I see different birds at my feeders.  I can't identify birds by their calls.  Okay...so I know an owl if I hear one!  And I can also identify a whip-poor-will's call.  But after that I'm lost.

I love LOVE LOVE having feeders out in the winter-time and watching the birds come and go.  They bring with them cheer even in the darkest of winter days.  My favorites are the very shy and easily spooked cardinals and the black-capped chickadees.  We've had a few owls come visit but they usually stay far away.  Sometimes we can hear them at night talking to each other.

In the spring I love to hear the Bird Symphony- the chattering and melodies of all the birds singing in our woods.  We've also seen an assortment of Unusual Places Robins Will Make a Nest.  Like the time one robin made a nest in my decorative basket hanging on the front door.  We couldn't use the front door for several weeks for fear of the parent robins abandoning their young!

In the summer I love seeing the brilliant flash of neon red from a scarlet tanager or the amazing blue of the indigo bunting.  I love watching the hummingbirds do their little battles with each other.  Apparently they're really territorial.  I mean REALLY territorial.  I always worry about walking in the middle of those battles whether they're going to accidentally jab me instead!  (hasn't happened yet- thank goodness!)  I love watching the blue birds and the red-wing black birds in the fields.  The herons are beautiful creatures to watch (but I've yet to see one at my house).  We've also had encounters with bald eagles and turkeys on a variety of occasions.  We've also gotten to see a pileated woodpecker swooping through the woods (you can hear them too!  Loud and clear...like a very fast & loud hammer).  Lately we've observed flocks of pelicans circling high above us- so very graceful.  And of course it'd be foolish to forget the Canada geese!

Hmm...did I miss any birds?  Here's a bird guide I've found online...All About Birds.  I'm also thinking about getting the Science Investigator's Kit for Homeschoolers (it's all about birding) for us to work on over the summer.

Did you spot the two Not Birds in the photo collage? Gotta keep you on your toes!  :-)

I just had to add this video clip on birds (Portlandia: Put a Bird on It).  It's hilarious!

Things I Love: Mr. Roy G. Biv aka {Rainbows}

I have a thing when it comes to RAINBOWS
Why?  I'm not really sure...maybe it's because they symbolize Potential. Hope. Joy. Happiness.

OR.......

maybe I'm still five years old! LOL!
Beautiful Rainbow

Here is a random selection of photos of items that are (mostly) rainbow colors.  Or just colorful!

Annika's favorite light jacket (I can't believe she's not wearing it today!)

My Rainbow Fish in the Girls' Bathroom:

One of my favorite blogs I've recently found is Whatever.  I fell in love with her colorful blog from the first not-yet-had-my-cup-of-coffee-yet-and-still-grumpy-in-the-morning-moment I looked at it.  It definitely put a big smile on my face!  And that's saying a lot considering I hadn't had my caffeine IV ten five two cups of coffee!
Gotta love those IKEA kids cups and plates! (and my Anthropologie latte bowls)

 Annika with her version of a Dream Catcher.  Maybe I'll dream about Rainbows!  Annika has made a whole bunch of these for everyone in our family.  I haven't figured out a good way to display her string of beads dream catcher.

My colorful felt flower wreath.

perler bead rainbows made by Annika

Or how about a plate full of Rainbow Play Dough Cookies?

colorful pom poms on twigs (to simulate pussy willow branches)
Ava's colorful painting
Rainbow Toadstool Mushroom from last year (going to make more of these soon!)
our egg crystal experiment from last year
Ava in her rainbow exersaucer in 2009
Fun little color experiment we did two years ago using colored water. (the experiment was about mixing colors)

I have to, must, need to make these gorgeous rainbow jello desserts!

I know there are lots more rainbows to be found in my house but I don't want to completely overwhelm you! LOL!

I just realized that I have perhaps a rather loose interpretation of ROYGBIV.  I guess I consider anything colorful (with bright colors) to be rainbow-colored.  Please forgive me!  LOL!
 :-)

Show me your favorite Roy G Biv item you have at home!

Things I Love {Polish Pottery}

I was first introduced to Polish Pottery while on a family visit to Austria several years ago (Annika had just turned one).  We stopped in to see - actually meet for the first time- a relative (second cousin? not sure) of mine.  I noticed all these beautiful blue and creamy mugs hanging in her kitchen and wondered where they came from (but I didn't get a chance to ask her about them).

I discovered what they were a couple of days before our departure back home ...

Polish Pottery.

Actually, if I hadn't been thwarted in my attempt to purchase a Gmundner Keramik piece (Austrian pottery) in Salzburg I would have never purchased my first piece of Polish Pottery.  I ended up with the Knoblauch (that's garlic in German) jar.  Guess what?  Seven years later I'm still using that lidded jar to store my garlic in!

The nice thing about these pieces is that they both look beautiful and are completely functional.  I can wash them in the dishwasher and I've put mine in the microwave.  I've read that they're oven and freezer safe (but I don't think the pottery can handle extreme temperature range).  I like them because I don't see them everywhere!

Here are just a few examples of Polish Pottery I happily own:

A few of my cheerful mugs.  My current favorite is the one front and center (with butterflies).  Annika's mug is on the left and Ava's mug is to the right of my mug.  Their mugs are a smaller version of mine.  Great for hot chocolate, teas and COFFEE!!!

I think this Lovely Lady is a Cheese Bell...I use her for decoration.

One of my pretty bowls...

Another, slightly larger, bowl

The piece that started my fascination with Polish Pottery....The Knoblauch jar...or The Garlic Jar

I just love those turquoise butterflies!

I'd like to add a HUGE THANKS to my Mom and to Mark's Parents who have helped me build up my collection!

Do you have a collection of a particular pottery you absolutely love?

Things I Love {Etsy}

There's something about Etsy that makes me feel all gooey & warm inside.  I {love} that you can buy handmade items directly from the artist.  Somehow it just feels better than buying something that was Made in China. Know what I mean?

Here's a print that just Cracks. Me. Up:

***

I adore all of Geninne's bird prints
I'd LOVE to collect all of her bird prints (I have two already but I want more, more, more!). {hint, hint}

Geninne also has a fabulous eye candy blog.

***

Here's a print from Native Vermont:
It reminds me of our yellow lab Mocha.

***

This apron makes me giggle...wouldn't it make cooking & doing housework more fun?
I'm pretty sure I'd still be grumbling about the housework.
I found this apron at Snappy Shop and there are lots of other fun ones to choose from!

***

I could see several of Yumi Yumi's prints hanging on my walls.
hmmm....I seem to have a thing for flowers and birds.

***

Oh my....I think I need a new bag!

How about this cheerful one from Deyitta's Shop?

***

Or how about a wallet in yummy fabric?
This lovely is available at Cotton Purr's Shop (& lots of other yummy fabric choices!)

Here are some more wallets that make me smile:

This one has funny dogs...
or how about some love birds?
These wallets are from Happy Kathy's shop.

***
Or how about an Alaska Love print for those of us who get a little homesick now and then?

These happy prints are from The Whitfield by Katie:
And here's something that fits perfectly for our family:
Since we love getting out our telescope and gazing at the stars & planets!
