Spring Time Surprise

The girls have finally discovered that they can play in the forest...

SOooo, in order to prevent trips to the Emergency Room from nasty thorns (see photo below of a prime example of what I'm talking about) we cleared out a small patch of forest. It's going to be our secret garden! What did that mean? I pulled out all the nasty, thorny gooseberry plants, raspberries, green briar and wild roses (we have lots of these elsewhere). Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!!! Pulling out those plants HURT!

I'm pretty excited to finally have a secret garden. It's not so secret at this point...but just you wait until the trees leaf out fully! I think I'll have some potted plants and some other fun accessories....

And...
A Robin's Nest in a nasty black locust tree!
Check out that nasty, thorny tree! Those thorns would spear you if you got to close! (no eggs as of Saturday)
Do you see now why we call this place Bristling Acres??? This tree (and unfortunately many others on our property) really do bristle with lots of thorns.
This photo was taken on Tuesday, four days after we discovered the nest....THREE robin's eggs!
I really love the color of those eggs. I just can't believe they're that blue! So vibrant!
I'm keeping a watch on the nest. The mama robin flies away every time I get too close to the tree (wouldn't she want to stay and protect her nest?).

Those thorns are nuts - absolutely insane. Robin's eggs are so springy and cheery! I hope the babies survive their learning-to-fly stage, living in that tree full of skewers. The up-side is that they should be very well-protected from predators.

Thanks for stopping by!

Oooooo, they don't call it Robin's egg blue for nothing, do they. You could take one of those to the paint store & have them match it up. I know, don't want to disturb the eggs, but it would be tempting, that's such a pretty blue.
