and more 4th of July celebrations

Here is the berry trifle I made for the Fourth of July celebration. I baked a raspberry cake in this Pyrex dish and after it cooled I cut it into three pieces. I tried using a recipe on allrecipes. com for the trifle cream (pudding powder mixed with sour cream and Cool Whip) but it tasted disgusting (to my taste anyway) and I used good ol' fashioned cream whipped with sugar and vanilla. Much better! I layered the cake with layers of bananas soaked in pineapple juice and various berries and the whipped cream. Yummy!
This is where we watched the Dubuque Air Show that was hours before the Dubuque Fourth of July fireworks. We went back home since we had three hours to burn before the fireworks started. We really enjoyed watching the fireworks...mainly because we were far enough away to not hear them and we weren't showered with shrapnel afterwards. It was a breeze getting out too. The only downside was that we were parked on a road with people coming and going. Lousy drivers who couldn't make up their minds where they wanted to go!

On the fourth of July we went over to a friend's house for dinner. I was too busy having fun to take photos. Oops. Maybe my friend took a few. We shared the yummy berry trifle with them.
On Saturday we had an incredible day- we first headed to the Henry Vilas Zoo (in Madison) followed by several shopping stops (boring but necessary) and last but not least an ice cream pit stop before heading home.
Annika LOVES carousel rides! Ava, on the other hand, wasn't super thrilled.

Lunch consisted of homemade pb&j sandwich "pies", cherries, eggs, fresh peas, trifle and beet and green onion salad. Ice cream! Okay, so it was frozen custard and it was super expensive for what it was BUT it was a nice treat to end our day in Madison.
