Plastic Canvas Sewing....

A first lesson in sewing:  using plastic canvas to create colorful hangers & bookmarkers

It all started out with Ava watching me sew up the ripped seams on her snow pants.  As I was stitching she said she wanted to learn how to sew.

Does that sound like a golden opportunity or what?

It did to me and I seized it!
I remembered that I'd purchased plastic canvas shapes and colorful yarn over a year ago (or has it been two years????).  I got the idea from the Let's Explore blog.  The girls, at that time, were not amused or thrilled learning how to sew.  So it sat in my pile-o-to-do-craft-projects for a long, long time.  Until now!  It's amazing how a spark of interest in one girl ignited...and then, of course, the other one wanted to try as well.

Ava picked out this heart which we'd started sewing (it's the orange yarn on the outer most part of the heart- you can tell because the stitching is different from the rest of the heart).  Ava did require more help than Annika but she was persistent.  At first she had lots of knots and tangles to undo but by the time she was finishing up the heart she needed minimal assistance.

Usually it works out this way: Annika does something-anything- and Ava wants to do what Big Sister is doing.  BUT this time went the other way- Ava tried it first and then Annika wanted to jump on the Sewing Train.
She decided to make a pretty bookmarker.....

Ava's finished heart....

Ava's finished heart!

Annika's finished bookmarker (now in its new job as a placeholder in our Lord of the Rings book)

The girls did a wonderful job! That looks like a great way to start them on sewing...file it in my mental "to-do list"...
